The Girls of Play Go their Separate Ways…

It is with great, great sadness that I bring you the following statement. Play was a huge part of my life and I will always look back at the group and smile. Thank you girls for another few years of music and memories. I love all of the girls and wish them all the best. And to everyone who has been loyal followers and visitors of Play Mania, I thank you with all of my heart.

As many of you know, since last summer I have worked with Play in planning the group’s return to the U.S. this year. I am very sorry to tell you that what started out with such great promise has ended unexpectedly and unhappily, for the girls had a disagreement and broke up over it. Since it does not appear they are going to make any kind of statement I feel I owe it to you, the fans, to try to put this past year in some perspective so we can all have closure from what has been an emotional ten year roller coaster ride with this group.

Before I met the girls I was a fan like you. Like most of you I hoped they might one day reunite. In late 2009 it became a reality. The problem is, with all things real there are inevitable bumps in the road. Anna was not invited to rejoin and some of you were unhappy about that decision. Then Rosie dropped out for unrelated reasons.

Still, with Anais and Faye I thought Play could conquer the world. As young women and artists they have many incredible qualities. They make an amazing team. Faye is one of the best vocalists and performers in the world as we all know, and Anais is so mature, polished, and determined. Anais walks in a room and just takes it over with her beauty, intelligence and presence, and no doubt she will be a great success no matter what she does. It was a strong trio because Sanne is not just window dressing, she is a formidable vocalist in her own right.

My work unexpectedly brought me in contact with Laila and I was given a chance to help the girls return to the U.S. When I first spoke to the girls I told them their timing was good because the world is waiting for the next big girl group to emerge, but if they wanted to fill that void they would have to work harder and with much greater passion than I had seen from them on the internet the past few months. They swore to me they were ready to do those things and would never give up. There was great excitement when the girls came to Los Angeles last August. Everyone loved them. Everyone was thrilled to have Anais and Faye back. We met with music people and television people and everything went perfectly. We went to Interscope Records, the biggest record label in the world, and they loved the girls. What was supposed to be a 20 minute meeting turned into a full day at Interscope. Before they left LA the girls gave a showcase before a large music industry audiance, and they performed with a passion that had been missing. People were buzzing with excitement, and everyone was convinced Play was a sure thing to be the next super girl group. The future looked so bright.

We were planning to finalize certain deals when Disney called and asked the girls to record Destiny. I was up all night negotiating the deal because the girls had to be in the studio the next morning. Then, out of the blue, Faye woke up, called Laila, and told her she had changed her mind and did not want to sing anymore. She quit, on the spot, with no notice. There was total hysteria. Total devestation.

Laila, Anders and Andreas had invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in the new Play, on a television show and an album. Faye had come to Los Angeles and met everyone, so it was a huge embarrassment to go back and tell people one of the members had left already. Sanne and Anais had to record Destiny alone. They cried all day. Anders, Andreas, and Laila met with Faye but she would not budge. They felt betrayed, and Anais and Laila, in particular, were grief stricken.

In retrospect, it probably should have ended when this happened because let’s face it, Faye is irreplaceable. But then Emelie came along, and I like Emelie a lot. She has her own cool style, she is very intelligent, and I thought it could still work. All three girls were here in January and they did well. We had funding in place, we had a game plan, and it was time to make the big push.

But when the girls returned home from the U.S. they went their separate ways and never got back together. At first it was as though they were taking a break, but that led to disagreements and misunderstandings. Certainly part of it was poor communication, and I was confident if they just sat down and talked they could work it out, but they never got together. Further, some members felt they were willing to sacrafice more and work harder but that the others did not share that same commitment. Whatever it was, in the end, after Rosie left and Faye quit, perhaps it was just not meant to be.

Why do I tell you all this? Because as fans who have supported the group for so long you deserve to know what happened as best it can be explained. The lesson is, as fans it is important to keep a grasp on the distinction between reality and fantasy.

Our heroes are human, they are imperfect, and what we get to see of them is often more illusion than real. The truth is always more complicated. When you meet the girls it is hard not to love them even when they do things that drive you crazy.

I prefer to remember Play as the girls appeared at the time the Replay album was released and the group seemed headed for immense success. Anais, Fanny, Rosie, and Anna, four girls who were talented, fun, sweet and pretty — if anything, ahead of their time. What they created was very special and gave us much joy. With all things in life it was fleeting. We will never know how far Play could have gone, then and now, if Fanny had stayed. In my mind, she made the difference between a group that was good and a group that was great (unstoppable)..

Play gave us something to smile about, and whether the girls ever understood or even cared, we were all fortunate to experience the magic.

Sincerely,
Glen Kulik

Play is Going into the Studio Soon & Needs Your Help!

There was such a great response as to which songs are your favorites from Under My Skin, and the girls now need your help in choosing a fifth song from that album to possibly remix and record with Emelie. They are heading to the studio very soon and need to make a decision!

We need your help! In the next few days we have to decide what songs from Under My Skin to prepare to include on our U.S. EP or album — we are going into the studio very soon to work on whatever songs are chosen. Based in large part on the response we received from all of you on Play Mania the tentative decision has been made to use Not The One, Trash, Consequence of You, and Show Me What You Got. But we want to prepare to use one more song and the people involved in the decision can’t seem to agree. What do you think? In addition to the four songs listed above what is the one additional song from UMS which you recommend we should remix with Emelie’s voice and prepare for our U.S. release?

We really need your help as even the three of us don’t agree on the choice — each one of us favors a different fifth song! Thanks for being there to help us.

Finalizing Music Details, Social Networking, & More!

First of all, thank you so much for the amazing response to our request to get to know you better. We hope you found it as interesting as we did to see there are Play fans all over the world and to understand better who you are and how long you have been following the group. We are happy so many of you liked the album Under My Skin but at the same time we noticed some of you could not get it where you live or because it is too expensive. We are going to figure out a way to make our music accessible to all of you in the near future and hopefully at an affordable price.

Right now we are working on decisions for our music.. We are in the process of making the final decision on which songs from UMS will be on the EP or album we release in the U.S., then we will go in the studio and rework them with Emelie’s voice and perhaps some new remixes. We will then come to the U.S. to write and record new songs with Universal and perhaps others. We have asked Disney about using Destiny for our CD and are awaiting a response. If they give us permission we may tweak that song as well to add Emelie’s voice and to perhaps include some bigger ad libs in the second half of the song so it has a bit more power — remember, we had to record that song in a day so there was no time to get fancy. The other thing we are working on right now are our own Facebook page, Twitter page, Youtube account, and website. These things will be done in the near future and we are excited because they will help us communicate with you more often and directly and they will be interactive so you can really feel you are going along with us on this journey.. We want you by our side each and every day!!!

Take care, and we love you.

Emelie, Sanne, and Anais

Play Sings “Time Of Your Life” by Green Day

We notice in the past few days many of you have commented that you would like to hear how we sounded during our recent trip to LA and NY. A clip has been posted on youtube of us performing the song Time of Your Life. We thought you might be interested in a little of the background. As many of you know, Play has always enjoyed performing acapellas and when we meet new people we usually perform in that manner so people can really hear how we sound. Three days before our recent trip we received a call from some of the television people with whom we are working stating that we had to be ready to perform the song Time of Your Life by Green Day. It was not a request, it is an order! So we quickly had to learn the words and create our own vocal arrangement. That is something which normally takes alot of time and practice, but in this case we only had three days. When we arrived in LA we were still perfecting the sound so we were a little unsure of ourselves. When we sang we alternated doing that song with Not The One and Too Lost In You. But the more we performed Time Of Your Life during the trip the more we liked it and became comfortable singing it. We would practice in the car on the way to our many meetings. The clip you will see on youtube was from the later part of our trip when we were in New York and by then we felt comfortable. The visual on this clip is not great but the accoustics in the room were good so the sound is good and it will give you a chance to hear how we sound. Another thing that was positive about this clip is the previous week when we were in LA Emelie had a cold for much of the week but she was feeling much better by the time we reached New York and so her voice was its normal strong and beautiful self. You may find it funny to see how bundled up we were since it was only 18 degrees in NY during that day, and we had just come from LA where it was 80 degrees and we were wearing shorts and were outside most of the time. Our next video we post will be from LA and you can see the contrast. You have a very interesting country, where it can be 80 degrees in one place while it is 18 degrees in another. Sweden is very small and at this time of year it is cold and dark everywhere.

Hope this gives you a little insight on the creation of our latest acapella and that you like it when you listen to the youtube clip. Thanks for all your continuing support.

Love, Sanne, Anais and Emelie

Play Answers Some of Your Questions!

The response yesterday was amazing, thank you all so much! The girls are reading your comments, and in this message, they address some of your concerns. They have also sent another new picture. They look so happy, so excited for them!

Wow, the results of yesterday’s poll were so interesting to us — thanks to everyone who took the time to respond.. It shows the dilemma we face — there are fans for all of the songs so it is hard to get a consensus on which three would be best. We have the same problem. For example, we personally like “Under My Skin” alot but some others have counseled us not to include that track. The good news is, for any song that does not make the actual EP, we will try to see that it is at least posted on iTunes so everyone can purchase his or her favorite tracks no matter what.

Since it was so nice of you to give us your feedback we’d like to answer some of your questions. First, any song on the EP will have Emelie’s voice on it for legal, professional and fairness reasons. Not only that, we are likely to remix the songs so they have a less guitar-driven sound and are a bit more current for the North American market. Some of you also asked about Destiny, yes, that song is a possibility for the EP but we would need Disney’s approval since that is a song they control. We would like to add Emelie’s voice to the song and start to perform it. We are well aware that thousands of people on the internet have asked about when and how they can buy the song. If Disney does not post it themselves then we will do our best to post it whether or not it is on our EP. On another subject, we have a number of acapella songs on video now but since they are live and mostly recorded outdoors in different settings the sound varies in quality just as with the videos you saw of us performing in different locations last year. We will release something to you very soon so you can hear how we sound.

To answer one final question, you should not assume Emelie will be singing Fanny’s parts. All three of us will sing lead sections as has occurred this past year on different songs, but when it comes to the ad libs and the harmonies you are more likely to hear Sanne sing those parts with Emelie singing the high harmonies (somewhat like Rosie used to do) and Anais singing the lower harmonies. We think you will be very happy with how our voices fit together, and for those of you who have not had a chance to hear what Sanne is capable of you might just be very surprised.

Hope this answers most of your questions for now. We’ll have more important issues we hope you will help us with which we will pose to you very soon, and we will also post video footage. Our reel that we are preparing for MTV is almost done and we are excited about it. We will tell you more about MTV soon.

Love, Emelie, Sanne and Anais.
